The first glasses appeared in Italy at the beginning of the 13th century. Today we use glasses not only as a method of eye vision correction, but also as a fashion accessory. Let's find out more about glasses, their history and the way they work!

And here are 7 little-known facts about glasses:

#1 In Africa, glasses are extremely expensive

In some African countries, average people have to spend their three months' salary to buy a pair of glasses!

#2 Most "glasses" today are actually made of plastic

Plastic makes spectacle lenses lighter and prevent them from breaking.

#3 Reading in dim light is not harmful to your eyes

Yes, it's a myth. Proper lighting only makes the process easier, but its reducing doesn't damage one's eyesight.

#4 Approximately 25% of the world's population require eyeglasses!

6 out of 10 people in the developed world wear glasses or contact lenses.

#5 The reading stone - a great-grandparent of glasses

This was a vision correction device used in 1000AD! The reading stome looked like a thin glass sphere and wasn't simple-to-use at all!

#6 People used to believe that wearing gold earrings would improve their vision

Sailors wore lots of them to have a perfect vision they needed while navigating! Today this superstition sounds super strange...

#7 Our brain can correct our vision

If you wore glasses which flipped images upside down, your brain would adapt and correct your vision in a few days, so you would see everything the right way up.

Ian Swindale, Keep eating a wide variety of veggies 🥗, fruits 🍉 and fish 🐠 in order to keep cataracts, glaucoma or other eye diseases @ bay. Since you already have the start of cataracts, it is time to undergo the surgery. My late mother underwent it in her early 70s.

Raashid Khan, By the time you reach your mid or late 50s, you would need the bifocals. Keep eating a wide variety of veggies 🥗, fruits 🍉 and fish 🐠 in order to avoid developing the cataracts or glaucoma or other eye diseases.

Very interesting and informative and, as far as I am concerned, particularly item no. 3 about dim-light not being harmful to vision when reading. I originally thought it was!

I have astigmatism and due to that could not go into the seaman branch of the Royal Navy but that didn't seem to bother the Royal Artillery!!! Now that I'm 76 I also get blurring and in some cases double vision giving total credence to what the video said so I've given up driving. It can also lead to cataracts and I'm told I have the start of that condition although there are surgical procedures that can assist.
