I disagree with the supposed correct answer of 13 to #11. The triangle created has one side of 10' and the other side of 24'. The hypotenuse, or the distance between the two men, correctly is 26'.

charlie, but there are TWO 5,12,13 right triangles. Person 1 may go 5 mi EAST and 12 mi SOUTH and is 13 mi from START. Person 2 goes 5 mi WEST and 12 mi NORTH and is 13 mi from START. They are 26 miles apart.

The answer to #11 is 26. Each person’s path describes a right triangle with sides of 5 and 12 and an hypotenuse of 13. The distance between them is the sum of the two hypotenuses, 13 + 13 = 26.
