Are You Smarter Than A Fourth Grader?

Here are 12 of the 30 questions from the 2016 Whatcom County Math Championship test given to fourth graders. To beat math champ Ethan Rockwell of Silver Beach Elementary, you will need to get at least nine of the 12 correct. How many can you get right (even with the help of multiple choice)? No calculators, Google or mathematically inclined friends allowed (not even fourth-graders).

gary, It's not that difficult to figure out! 60 divided by 48 is 1.25 or 125%.

gary, A quarter is 25 cents. A dime is 10 cents. A nickel is 5 cents. Start with 3 quarters (75) + 2 dimes (20), for 95 cents. Then 3 quarters (75) + one dime (10) + 2 nickels (10), Then 3 quarters (75) + 4 nickels (20) Then 2 quarters (50) + 4 dimes (40) + 1 nickel (5). Then 2 quarters (50) + 3 dimes (30) + 3 nickels (15) Then 2 quarters (50) + 2 dimes (20) + 5 nickels (25) Then 2 quarters (50) + 1 dime (10) + 7 nickels (35) Then 2 quarters (50) + 9 nickels (45) Then 1 quarter (25) + 7 dimes (70). Then 1 quarter (25) + 6 dimes (60) + 2 nickels (10) Then 1 quarter (25) + 5 dimes (50) 4 nickels (20) Then 1 quarter (25) + 4 dimes (40) + 6 nickels (30). Continue this pattern with one quarter (25) until you use no dimes and reach 14 nickels (70) Then you eliminate the quarters and start with 9 dimes (90) + 1 nickel (5). Keep converting dimes into nickels until all you have is 19 nickels (95)

David Hill, There are 30° between each of the 12 numbers of a clock, for a total of 360 degrees in a full circle. At 11:00 the minute hand is directly over the 12 and the hour hand Is directly over the 11. The hands form a 30° angle.

8 / 12. Above average. Quite a tough quiz. I might have got one more if I knew what nickels, dimes and quarters are!

I counted only 9 primes between 1 ant 30 . As for the last one, don't know how to solve it. This would have been a tough test for 4th graders. 70 and still working out my brain. Cheers :)

Bruce Maine, I didn’t check 12 but 9 is right. He gave you one endpoint and the middle. Find the other end for the pair then add them together (16,-8)
