Susan Lake-Harris, That is not the standard British spelling. The British (and everyone else in standard English) spell "pastime" with a single 's' (p-a-s-t-i-m-e), not two 's's as "passtime," though it's a COMMON MISSPELLING because it comes from "pass time" (to spend time) and means an enjoyable activity to "pass the time". The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) spells it as pastime, as a single, combined word.

Susan Lake-Harris, and it's now considered acceptable in Australia and the UK - but not when I was in school (about 50 years ago). LoL.

In Aussie and UK English, it's passtime (i.e., something you might do to pass the time), however, I've read a few US books so knew it was acceptable spelling to not use double-s.
