Adding salt to boiling water will increase the temperature. However, the amount of salt you would reasonably add to cooking water will barely make any difference. In order to make a noticeable difference you would have to add way too much salt. And I’m still throwing out the closed mussels.

Barbara Gilberts, Sorry, but you are mistaken about the oil. All oil will do is float on the top. It has no effect on the pasta.

barrattjohn, If you add oil to pasta water, the sauce won't stick to it. The pasta should be drained and immediately added to the sauce.

moredearer, The banana answer is true. I have used it to ripen avocadoes.

Donna Curry, salt increases the boiling point of the water which in turns lessens the cooking time.
