Order of operations say to solve within the parentheses, but not remove them. Then do multiplication/division from left to right. I think teachers sometimes tell students to 'Remove' the parentheses which would say to do the multiplication for that part of the problem to remove the parentheses, and then do the rest of the multiplication/division from left to right. My algrebra teacher did. But these quizzes usually use the 'solve' within the parentheses method, and leave the parentheses. I just follow that rule when doing these quizzes.

15/15 And I don't agree with every 'correct' math answer.

11/15 The math sequences without parentheses always get me. I don't know which to do first. I need to Google it or something because I always get those wrong. If they would leave the problem on the screen after you answer it, I could figure it out but alas they do not.

Unfortunately, whoever writes these math string problems DOES NOT follow the correct sequential format for solving mathematics problems with parenthesis. Sorry whoever you are, you need to go back to elementary school and learn basic arithmetic. You should not have to be any engineer to write these simple formula and give the correct answer for the problem.

Richard D. Boyle, For me, I suspected that something changed since I learned the progression, and PEMDAS was mentioned, so I looked it up online (an improvement with the advent of computers). Now one has only to figure out whether the author of the quiz uses PEMDAS or not.

earlepg, I thought I had learned all I needed to know with PEMDAS but I kept missing some strings. It took me a few months of L to R refinements before I felt completely confident. I learned my math strings in the late ‘40s and it was just L to R. At least, that’s all I remember. Now I can get the correct answer on even the most complex strings

15/15 Did exactly what Richard D. Boyle did, and it worked for me as well.

15/15. All correct answers...including the math strings. They used to bewilder me but reading and paying attention to QC member comments has taught me to do them correctly.

No, they are all right, and I got 15, it’s just that old annoying order of operations, my son explained it to me!Paul Davies,

When you get an incorrect math answer, it would be better to leave it on the screen to rethink the problem.

60% ...’Amazing score’. Who’ kidding who hereI’m pretty good at mental arithmetic but how they arrived At some these type of questions I’m totally lost!!! ... and I’m not a poor looser. I have just read some of the other comments and several are of my observation.👍
