Florence McKenna Hiscock,
We solve equations by a worldwide standard order of operations.
We solve inside parentheses or brackets first, followed by exponents/orders next. Then we multiply and/or divide. Since these two functions carry equal weight, we perform these functions in the order they appear in the equation from left to right. We don't necessarily do division before multiplication. The order we do these functions is determined by where they appear in the equation from left to right.
Then we do addition and subtraction in the order they appear in the equation from left to right because these two functions are also of equal weight.
This equation is:
8 + 2 ÷ (4 - 2) = ?
Here we solve within the brackets first yielding:
8 + 2 ÷ 2 = ?
Then we multiply and or divide from left to right. This yields:
8 + 1 = ? Then we add yielding the answer of 9.
The answer is correct as given.
I hope that helps.

cdowdy aks,
Simple do the bracket first, 4-2=2. Then do division 2 / 2 = 1, then do 8 + 1 = 9
8 + 2 / (4-2)

jcdangusa,
You did the addition before the division. That was your mistake.
4 - 2 = 2 Brackets first
2/2 = 1 Division is next
8 + 1 = 9 Addition is the final operation in this equation.
9 is the correct answer.
