Christopher Skinner, The argument (true of false) is that most of the Bariier Reef is calcium deposits from dead organisms, over which the living coral grows. It is in Minnesota and into surrounding areas, and is a fungus that has mycelia that have spread underground over a huge area. The proper answer should have been "fungus" , not "mushroom", but I knew what they meant. Sometimes these quizzes want "aspen", because there is an aspen in (I think) the NW of the US that really one gigantic root system for what looks like a forest from a distance, but is really one organism.

Player Dennis, I have heard that, too, but most it is old calcium from dead organisms, over which the living part grows.

David Armstrong, I think they regard the reef as made up of innumerable separate organisms, due to the genetic diversity of the corals. The fungus, on the other hand is one organism and is genetically the same from one end to the other.

Mushroom incorrect....The largest single living organism based on area is a specimen of Posidonia australis seagrass (aka Poseidon’s ribbon weed) located in Shark Bay off Western Australia, covering approximately 200 square kilometres (77 square miles) – equivalent to around 28,000 soccer fields or more than 450 times bigger than Vatican City, the world's smallest country. The superlative seagrass meadow was described in a paper published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B on 1 June 2022.
