True! There is an area called the McMurdo Valleys. This place hasn't seen rains for 2 million years! The Dry Valleys are practically free of snow and ice. Its landscape is often compared with Martian ones.
#2 Everest is the tallest mountain on Earth
False! Everest is the highest mountain, measured from the sea level (29,035 feet). However, the tallest is Mauna Kea, an inactive volcano in Hawaii. Its elevation is 13,796 feet but if you measure it from its underwater base to its peak it'll equal to 33,000 feet.
#3 Sydney is the capital of Australia
False! Though Sydney is the largest city in Australia, the capital is Canberra. This small city was selected as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne.
#4 The distance between USA and Russia is about 4 kilometers
True! The border between these two countries passes across the Bering Sea. There are two small islands, one is owned by the USA, the other by Russia.
#5 Electric chair was invented by a dentist
True. Alfred P. Southwick from Buffalo developed it as an alternative to hanging.
#6 Japan people live longer than others
True! The life expectancy in Japan is 83.7 years. It is followed by Switzerland, Singapore, Spain and Australia.
#7 Calama hasn't had rains for 400 years
True! This city in Chile is considered to be the driest. There are riverbeds that have been dry for thousands of years. It is even thought to be a desert for more than 3 million years. If so, it is the oldest dry place on Earth.
#8 The golden Gate bridge is made of gold
False! It got its name after the Golden Gate Strait. It's also interesting to know that the strait was named by U.S. Army officer John C. Fremont two years before the California Gold Rush began, so its "golden" name is not connected with gold discovery.
