Eternal frost: the coldest inhabited places on Earth

This city of 4,581 is the northernmost in the US. Its citizens experience very cold and windy winters due to the fact that the city is built on permafrost. The sun there sets at the end of November and rises the next time only at the end of January. The warmest month is July with its 23 degrees Fahrenheit. To get to the city is possible only by aircraft or by sea.

Located in the valley of the White River, no wonder Snag is a place where the lowest temperature was -81 degrees Fahrenheit on Feb. 3, 1947 according to the records. Moreover, it’s the lowest temperature in continental North America. We guess, Snag can offer the locals only cold winter all year round.

The city has been a regional hub in cattle breeding and tin and gold mining since 1638. Residents of this bone-chilling city with its average temperature of -49 degrees Fahrenheit in January have to wear huge fur hats and coats and stay indoors in case cold gets severe.

Oymyakon claims to be the coldest place in the Northern Hemisphere. The lowest temperature recorded there was -89 degrees Fahrenheit on Feb. 6, 1933. The locals though know how to handle cold winter: even when it’s -58 degrees schools stay open. Oymyakon welcomes all the travelers who are looking for extreme.

The city is quite warm in comparison with Verkhoyansk and Oymyakon, but still it’s one of the coldest places in the US. Winter season is long and cold. Average temperature in January is 5 degrees Fahrenheit. During winter International Falls gets really snowy (65.5 inches of annual snowfall).

Fraser, Colorado, is located in Colorado's Rocky Mountains not far from the popular ski area of Winter Park. Fraser is also believed to be one of the coldest in the US. The average temperature in winter is only around 3 degrees Fahrenheit. Both Fraser and International Falls were named as "Icebox of the Nation."

This city is well-known to fans of the board game Risk. It’s located between Siberia and Kamchatka. It's also believed to be the world’s coldest city to live in. It is quite right. The lowest temperature recorded was -83 degrees! However, the average temperature in January is -36 degrees Fahrenheit. Yakutsk is most populous of all the cities listed before. More than 200,000 residents live in the center of mining industry. Yakutsk is rather entertaining: there are numerous theaters, museums and even a zoo.

The city has a very felicitous name for a place with a cold climate. The phrase "Hell freezing over" is a joke there. Hell, Norway, has gained notoriety for the combination of its name and sub-arctic temperatures. Cold period of Hell runs from December through March with the average temperature of -13 degrees Fahrenheit.
