Australia, a country and a continent, will stay in your memory forever. Huge beaches of white sand, stunning open spaces, old rocks, waterfalls, mysterious forests and grand metropolitan cities are here waiting for tourists.
And what incredible animals and birds live here! In addition to that, Australians are heartily hospitable and emotional.

#1 Sydney Opera House
Sydney Opera House is recognized as one of the most outstanding buildings of the present time, and unique "sails" have long become the continent's visiting card.
#2 Harbour Bridge
Sydney's biggest bridge is one of the biggest steel arch bridges in the world. In one of the bridge's pylons there is a museum and the Pylon Lookout viewing point, showing a great view on the harbour and city center. People take grand photos from this point.
#3 The Twelve Apostles
This group of rocks in Port-Campbell National Park is located close to the Great Ocean Road, state of Victoria.
#4 Australian wonder - horizontal waterfalls
Australia is famous for its wonderful waterfalls. An unusually beautiful one is called Russel and a multi-level one is called Mitchel. But not everybody knows about another phenomenon - horizontal waterfalls. You can witness them in Talbot bay, where two rows of mountain are separated only by a distance of 300 meters. At full tide huge mass of water goes through the cracks, creating this wonderful phenomenon.
#5 Kangaroo island
It's a fun place both for children and grown-ups. National reserves and parks occupy one third of the island's territory. Among gigantic mountains and green wides you can meet goanna, koala, duck mole, dwarf penguin, barn owl, and of course kangaroo. Here, on Kangaroo island, you can also enjoy the view of dolphins and seals frisking in the ocean.
#6 Nitmiluk National park. Cruise along Katherine Gorge
Besides impressive landscapes here you can witness the wild life of local dwellers: jumping wallabies and flying foxes actually flying near travelers' tents, warrigals howling somewhere at a distance. And then you are about to take an adventurous trip to Katherine Gorge and a walk to Butterfly Gorge.
#7 Uluru Rock
It is hard to believe but scientists say this rock is about 680 million years old. Brown-orange mountain is located in Central Australia. It is 3,6 km long, 3 km wide and 348 meters high. In its footing there are a lot of caves with ancient cave drawings. Here you can see natives performing rituals.
#8 Wonderful Hiller and McKenzie lakes
McKenzie lake is the most beautiful freshwater lake, one of the cleanest in the world. You will spend unforgettable hours on its snow-white beaches. The pink lake Hiller is no less famous. In the beginning of the previous century they had been excavating salt in it, but then stopped. And today, as a part of Extreme Microbiome Project, scientists found out that such water color is brought about by water weed called dunaliella salina.
#9 Sydney Aquarium
To view all of this place you will spent about 3 or 4 hours. It is divided in Theme Zones: South Coast Shipwreck, Jurassic Seas, Sydney Harbour, Shark Valley, Dugong Island, Great Barrier Reef. There are three enormous floating Oceanariums built in here, together with 27 big basins and 23 aquariums. The things you can see there! Bright fish, floating among corals, sharp-toothed sharks, saltwater crocodiles, sea turtles, seals... Charmed, people walk looking through the the acryl glass of tunnels 150 meters long.
#10 The giant's valley
You can take an unforgettable walk among tops of 400-year-old trees. Made of titan, Tree Top Walk is built at the height of 40 meters. You will be amazed by the panoramic view of gigantic forest wides.
#11 The Pinnacles, Golden sands of Australia.
The Pinnacles are the highlights of Nambung National Park (Western Australia). This name can be translated as "desert of sharp rocks". Scientists are still trying to reveal their mystery. And they come to the conclusion that the Pinnacles are creations of all natural elements: water, earth, fire and air. By the way, from August to October it is blossoming season here.
#12 Great Barrier Reef
Great Barrier Reef is 2900 separate coral reefs and 900 islands in the Coral Sea. The Great Barrier Reef is spread along 2500 km of the north-east coast of Australia. It's the only big natural object on Earth, created by living organisms, perfectly visible from space.

I'm a proud Aussie born and bred. You barely touched the surface but that's okay. The almost untouched wild country in western Tasmania, Cradle Mountain National Park. The mighty Daintree Rain Forest in North Queensland, the fascinating country in northern South Australia around Coober Pedy where opal is mined and almost everyone lives underground. Even the churches are underground. The unbelievable carpet of wildflowers, found only in Australia that carpets the desert in spring in Western Australia. The snowfields in NSW and Victoria with more skiable snow than Switzerland. But my favourite place is the north coast of NSW. Stunning countryside, lush and green and beautiful, clean, uncrowded beaches. You must visit Newcastle, an hour's drive north of Sydney. The dining and accommodation are 5 star, the beaches have just been judged some of the best in Australia and a short drive west will take you to the Hunter Valley vineyards, the oldest in Australia, dating from 1834 and home to wines which are winning awards worldwide. Just come. You won't regret it!

My Mum is from Adelaide and made it to 94. I hope to do the same. I'm very proud of being half-Aussie (Father's "American" family from Poland) and announcing it to anyone who will listen and on many shirts, etc.. My wish and "goal" is to get to beautiful Adelaide and other areas before I do hit that 94 number. And I always found it "interesting" that my Mum lived in the U.S. (mostly) and never completely lost her accent. I do miss it. G'day mates.....

Another wonder of Australia that a lot of people don't know about is Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia. When I was there in 2019 I snorkelled with four whale sharks (one of them missed me by a metre), two other species of shark, manta rays, turtles and myriad colourful reef fish, as well as spotting humpback whales and minke whales. UNESCO World Heritage listed, yet somehow hardly anyone's heard of the place.

Joy Holbrook, Hello Joy, I’ve read your article with interest. I am also from Aus, but maybe not quite as passioate as you appear to be. I have travelled / visited many parts of our wonderful country and indeed many parts of the world and my little piece below yours would bear testament to the way I view our tiny patch of real estate in the universe. Whilst being a skier (but not as avid as I once was) it tickles me when I hear that wonderful statistic quoted “ Aus has more skiable snow than CH”. Really !! As a statistic, that may be sort of true, but are there tens of thousands of international visitors flocking to Thredbo, Perisher, Hotham, et al ?? Alack ‘n alas I have not had an opportunity to ski any of those wonderful resorts in Switzerland, but I have skied in Norway, Austria, Italy, New Zealand and Australia......oh and once in Utah. Yes, we do have skifields that work well. However, I do believe it paints a not quite accurate picture to suggest we are blessed with abundantly more riches than Switzerland !
